I don't think I've seen Ubuntu or Debian fail to upgrade major versions in... ever? Granted, I don't do those until a month or so after the release, but it's always been smooth. Maybe Mint is being extra precautious in their instructions? apt is pretty dang reliable. Backups should be a consideration regardless. I would suggest test running a couple of different desktops on live USBs to see what catches their eye. -J
