I feel the same disappointment about Mint.

It's my distro of choice.

For lower power computers, I like AntiX which is a Debian (Ubuntu?). But it
doesn't use SystemD.

Garuda Linux is a very pretty distro. It's Arch-based which I believe is
one of "The Hard" distros. I got it running Steam and games. But I didn't
use it long enough to find the difficult parts.

I'm looking forward to watching this thread.
