I'm using Nextcloud for general file-sync purposes. I think it's
generally preferred over owncloud nowdays.

My primary Card/Calendar is in my mail provider (Fastmail), but I do
sync it to Nextcloud occasionally as a backup.

Due to it's reliance on WebDAV, it's not as efficient as actual
dedicated file share app (Syncthing, etc). However, I find the benefit
of having a web client outweighs the theoretically inefficient file
transfers.

There's a desktop sync program as well that works pretty well for
two-way file sync.

Nextcloud does have a method to sync photos. However, browsing photos in
Nextcloud is basically like browsing a directory. There's not too much
intelligence there.

I recently switched my photos to immich. It's self-hosted as well, but
scans your photos (locally!) so you can do intelligent searching. It's
actually better than Google Photos' search. For example: "Red Car in
mall parking lot" turns up a ton of applicable photos in immich, while
google photos claims "No Results".
