I want to say no on that.  Your USB connection still goes through the motherboard to get to the drives.  But I've never tried that, so I could be wrong.   Conversely, you could rip out the firmware and use it as a drive rack, I imagine. What I did to set it up as a NAS was I connected a drive to my desktop,  then loaded Ubuntu Server, then configured the IP,  etc., from there.  Then pop that drive into the NAS and adding three more drives via LVM.  It worked fine for a few days then somehow stopped talking to me.  Really haven't had time to do a deep investigation as to what happened. I can't believe that this tablet still works...
