All valid and quite thoughtful points, Doug ....

The good news is that I am able to remove snap from 18.04 (desktop) and
20.04 (server).

sudo apt purge snapd

With no ill effect.

We will see if Canonical force snap to be installed or not. If they don't
force it, there is no compelling reason to leave the Ubuntu ecosystem (for
the time being).
