Yeah, but ... since you need the DID, and most providers have the 
facility at their end, using it avoids all such in the home. At least on 
a 99.9999% up time basis.

Did already suggest this. And, applies regardless - PITA losing phone 
and laptop (on battery power) for an hour's power glitch, for lack of a 
small UPS on the router / ATA. (Softphone, even.)

But at least in the latter case it's up close and personal (or it 
doesn't matter), and the provider will have sent the voice mail to your 
e-mail in the mean time - for you to pick up when you come out the other 
side of the power failure. (During which you're not going to be doing 
much with it, anyways - there will be other priorities on your mind.)
