 The "It works!" page was my goal after which I would reconfigure as 
 required.

 I looked at the conf files in apache2/sites-enabled and noted that one 
 was mapping to:
 /var/www/html

 This was new to me.

 /var/www/html was empty.

 I dropped in a "It works!" page, i.e. index.html, with my own text.

 FF: /localhost
 brought up the text from /var/www/html/index.html.

 Goal!
