[kwlug-disc] Natty Release & Linux / WinXP coexist

What you are asking comes default in the Ubuntu installer.

When you install it will offer you the possibility to resize the XP partition.

Even though I've never had any problem repartitioning, I would still recommend
that you backup any data you care about. And in this case that you create the
windows recovery disks before repartitioning, Just in case.

I concur with Kyle, Memory seems rather low. This days it seems to be more
important than raw CPU power.

In Ubuntu accessing the Windows partition is transparent ( you don't have to do
anything special, just access as any other disk)

but Windows does not come with the ext4 drivers)

My apologies for going over ground that has been covered before but .....

I have acquired a PC (desktop) w/a decent CPU, a decent HDD, 512 mB RAM and
w/licensed WinXP (that I want to keep available).

I also want Linux (Ubuntu 11.04 sounds good).

Here is the trick: I want a Linux partition to coexist w/the WinXP partitions
but I do not want to reformat / fdisk / restore.

IIRC There are tools that will allow an in-situ repartition that will do the
a) add a boot partition that will allow one to choose which OS to boot into
b) add a Linux partition
c) resize the existing WindowsXP partitions - 1 for user image and 1 for
backup/install image
d) access of WinXP partition from Linux (or vice versa) nice-to-have but not

Please confirm / advise.
