I've done a few upgrades and a few clean installs. On the whole, I'd
say Karmic is much improved over Jaunty, if only because they fixed
the Intel driver stack they broke in Jaunty.

Also, Karmic magically fixed my battery indicator, which had be broken
since Gutsy.

Network manager has marginally improved. My Dell Mini netbook comes
back instantly from suspend now. My laptop seems to be running a bit
cooler (I think Flash on 64bit Jaunty was causing the CPU to run full
tilt all the time).

On the downside, it looks like I've lost webcam and bluetooth HIDs on
my laptop. I haven't run the config tweaks from the manufacturer yet,
which might clean up some of that.

No problems upgrading desktop and girlfriend's machine. I clean
installed the netbook, which was running Hardy.

I'd agree with Raul. Casual/non-technical users should be running the
LTS, probably starting from the .1 release. It's not as pretty, but
it's a safer upgrade path. Ubuntu's come a long way, but Linux still
has its pitfalls on the desktop with little to no support from
hardware vendors.

Darcy.
