Well, it's November, so it is time to fall back into a KWLUG meeting.
This month we revisit the ever-popular topic of home automation with
a presentation from Khalid Baheyeldin. In this talk, Khalid will tell
us how he monitors indoor air quality (VOCs, CO2, Radon) in his house,
and then integrates Home Assistant with Mosquitto and Grafana to
create pretty (and hopefully not too scary) graphs of the readings.
In February Khalid will follow up this presentation with a sequel
about monitoring outdoor conditions, such as lightning strikes.
Our second presentation will be an update on Mikalai Birukou's project
PrivacySafe. As the name suggests, PrivacySafe is a suite of
applications (data storage, messaging) that puts user privacy first
and foremost, undecipherable by even the hosting server.
Our restaurant meetup for November is not yet confirmed, although
rumours suggest it will be held at Ethel's in Waterloo. Stay tuned to
the website or this mailing list for additional details.
In other news: as many of you know archive.org suffered a privacy
breach, and subsequently came under attack. They are still bringing
services up. In the meantime our audio podcast and video vidcasts have
been down, since they are hosted on archive.org . As of this writing,
it looks like the audio podcast is working, although embeds on the
website are still broken. Video is downloadable from the archive.org
page (https://archive.org/details/@kwlug-mb) but is not embeddable on
the KWLUG website. The current plan is to be patient and accept that
archives are broken for the time being. Our apologies for the outage.
In other other news: Would you be interested in a Cloud Native group
(https://www.cncf.io/) for Waterloo Region? As the name suggests, this
group would focus on cloud native technologies such as Kubernetes.
There used to be a group in town but it has gone dormant, and some
KWLUG members have expressed interest in reviving it. If you would
like to help revive it, please get in touch by emailing me or using
the website contact form, and I will forward your contact information
appropriately.
I think that's it for this month. We will be holding the meeting both
online at https://webconference.kwlug.org/room/kwlug and in-person at
LIB 329 at the Dana Porter library at the University of Waterloo.
