Here's a pretty good write up I found about the issue I had, which may 
have been different than yours (it wasn't truncating my drives):

I had it the other way around. It forcibly converts drives to 4096b 
sectors.

The drive when connected via sata reports the following via parted:

     Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B

When connected via the problematic USB enclosure:

     Sector size (logical/physical): 4096B/4096B

Because of this difference, the partition table can't be found 
correctly.
