You might be able to determine what happened by looking in the logs.  This
is from Debian, but it should be the same on Ubuntu.

/var/log/dpkg.log
/var/log/aptitude
/var/log/apt/history.log
/var/log/apt/term.log

If you use unattended-upgrades, there might also be something interesting in 

/var/log/unattended-upgrades/
