Found Auto Unload Tab, and installed it. Seems to do the trick after a
day of use, with Firefox's resident set staying at 1.8GB, rather than
over 4GB as previous.

Other candidates that I have not tried are:

Suspend Tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/suspend-tab/

Unload Tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unloadtab/

A common complaint about these is that they don't preserve the
tab/window state when Firefox restarted. I use Session Manager and
tell it to save the state every half hour or so, and therefore if
Firefox crashes, or I kill it for any reason, I tell it to load the
exact tabs I had previously.
