I use Bitlbee on a regular basis. Though, I'm thinking about setting
Matrix.org up to replace it, as it looks to be a more general, solid
solution to a network-bridging server -with more features and a very
active community. Either way, I like the idea of a server that does 
all the multi-protocol stuff and just using a simple client on all my 
devices.

If you really like IRC, Bitlbee is an excellent way a way to also
get your Twitter and IM done at the same time. It's definately a hobby
project for people who really like IRC and like tinkering though. 
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.
