I was also curious about some of these things so (before posting to
kwlug-disc) I had asked Andre about the strings attached. Here is what
I know so far:
- There are currently no financial obligations, codes of conduct, etc
that we need to comply with. We do have to provide them with our
contact info (and I would use an organizers alias for this).
- We can leave the organization if we don't like it by sending an
email.
- They are trying to organize as "a non-profit commmunity organization
under federal jurisdiction". I don't know exactly what those words
mean, but I take it that they do not have any official status yet.
As Mikalai discovered their DNS registration is very new, so they
are just getting started.
I do not mind advertising KWLUG events more widely (via the Linux
Foundation or elsewhere) but I don't want a lot of extra organizing
work put on my shoulders. (Andrew and the other secretive cabbalistic
organizers may feel differently about their shoulders.) In particular
I am not interested in being a Code of Conduct cop[1]. If somebody
wants to take on the responsibility for associating KWLUG with other
organizations then I am tentatively in favour of it, but (as you note)
the strings that are attached are important, and this somebody has to
be willing to shoulder the workload.
- Paul
[1] This is a sensitive topic that I don't really want to get into
on this email list. (I deleted a paragraph about why, because I really
don't want to discuss it in this thread. If you have concerns then
email me directly.)
