[kwlug-disc] TrueNAS scale (4-5 drive configuration)

I'd go with RAID 5 if the drives were all the same size, otherwise JBOD
might do the trick. Problem with JBOD is no redundancy, whereas RAID 5 (or
RAID 1, RAID 10, etc.) is great for redundancy. RAID 0 should be avoided
at all costs (the zero stands for how much of your data you'll get back if
one of the drives goes poof...)
LVM is your friend as well, particularly if you plan on adding more drives
in the future.
In an ideal world, where we all have unlimited money, then I would
recommend that you build a second NAS to mirror the first...
I hear good things about TrueNAS, but to be honest, I've never used it
myself.
My current NAS, a Synology DS412+, is twelve years old and no longer
supported by the manufacturer, so I'm currently trying to design a new NAS
for myself as well. And the twenty or so years old D-Link DS-323 that've
been using for backups is very sick as well, so there's a bit of a rush to
this project.... I'm playing with the idea of using a Raspberry Pi 5, once
I find a decent solution to attaching a bunch of disks. Plus, I have my 3D
printer standing by to build a case for the new NAS, once I get the
hardware plans settled. So I'm still in the planning stages...
