I double checked, and you're right. "Game" mode on the steam deck is 
native wayland. "Desktop" mode, which is just KDE, is still a native X 
session.

I suspect the folks that wrote the articles I googled earlier didn't 
bother checking game mode separately (since you can't as easily open a 
terminal in game mode).

As for games on a wayland desktop, I think the biggest complaints I've 
seen mentioned with wayland (some of these are GNOME-specific):

* Can't disable vsync (this matters more for online FPSes)

* No DRM Leasing (so VR doesn't work)

* Limited ability to alter input devices, since they're controlled by 
   the compositor exclusively with libinput+wayland.
