I hear what you are saying.
Though it is not practical in my case, because certain apps expect certain
device names, and changing them will be a pain.

Back to the issue at hand: turns out that the problem is between the
keyboard and
the chair. I left one app opening USB0 in one of screen's windows, and that
was
tying up that device, and when I insert it again, it is USB1.

Duh!
