[kwlug-disc] Booting the Raspberry Pi from a hard disk

The disk is a run of the mill Fujitsu SATA laptop disk, 5400RPM.
It runs fine with no current issues.

There is the voltage warnings in dmesg on the Pi 2 (only a warning, no
other ill effect),
but none of that on the Pi 3.

So there are no current issue, and a dock is not needed, or external power.

There is a noticeable delay though, around 400 milliseconds, when I try to
list a directory that has not been accessed before. Perhaps it is spin up
time? Or maybe file system delay (it is ext4) combined with the relatively
slow Pi CPU.

What remains unanswered is how to partition the disk for Raspian, or to get
NOOBS on it so I can install Raspian on it, then copy everything from the
SD to the disk.
