[kwlug-disc] Switching Jobs from Debian Shop to RHEL?

One thing that has been mentioned in passing, but needs to be stressed
more, is the RedHat default repositories.

In the Ubuntu/Debian world, the project itself hosts repositories for most
software projects out there. The most you have to do is enable
universe/multiverse/...etc. if they are not already enabled.

This means that you can start with a default Ubuntu LTS server plain
install, and just pull Apache, MySQL, PHP, Munin, Awstats, Memcached, a
myriad of other things, without having to search for repositories that
contain the software you want, nor configure them into your server.

In the RedHat world people often have third party repositories that they go
to bypassing the project's set of repositories.

Moreover, dependency management can be very different from Debian/Ubuntu.
If you do a yum search on a package and find it in the configured
repositories, that does not mean you can go ahead and installed it (which
is true for Debian/Ubuntu). You can have something in the dependency chain
that is not installed, and would not get installed if you say "installed
the packages I searched for".

So, you are back looking for the best repositories out there, and there is
considerable learning beyond "it is just rpm vs deb differences".
