Google Chat is not dead. It is incorporated in Google Hangouts.
Last I checked KDE Telepathy supported Jabber/XMPP, and was able to chat
with Google Talk users.

The thing that are dropping is server to server XMPP (federation), not
client to server XMPP.

The reasons they are doing this is mainly Microsoft.

So, yes, if you are relying on Google for federation, then you will be
losing something. But the reason is Microsoft, and Talk is not going away.
