MEDIA RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kitchener, ON (13 September 2013) Hackademy Canada (Hackademy), Waterloo Region’s new tech literacy organization, begins its inaugural learning season with an Introduction to WordPress course on Saturday, September 28. The cost for the full-day course is $50, with alternate payment options available to those in need. Interested attendees can register through hackademy.eventbrite.ca. Introduction to WordPress will be taught by Hackademy Director and Co-Founder Stephanie Rozek and Co-Founder Terre Chartrand at Kitchener’s Treehaus Collaborative Workspace.

“We chose to teach WordPress in our first course as it is an extremely popular website and blogging platform used by nearly 20 per cent of all sites today,” says Rozek. “Hackademy’s face-to-face learning experience is a fantastic way for beginners to get their feet wet, or for those with a bit more experience to dive deeper.”

Waterloo’s newest tech literacy organization
Hackademy is the newest addition to Waterloo Region’s high tech ecosystem. Its goal is to create opportunities, foster creativity and ignite excitement about technology within the Region, particularly for traditionally underrepresented groups in the field. It will also give those working in the tech sector an opportunity to contribute to the local knowledge economy within a supportive and inclusive network. Founded by Rozek, Chartrand, and Sean Yo, Hackademy is part of a worldwide movement to provide alternative learning opportunities to local communities.

“There’s a global movement that believes an understanding of tech and coding is the new literacy for the digital age,” says Chartrand. “Every month we’ll offer a variety of different classes to encourage continual learning and to grow our Region’s dynamic community of coders, hackers and makers.”

“Through our membership in the local Hive Waterloo (http://hackademy.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=98938364137c448bbf82ecaf2&id=7a5f5ebdff&e=88389c1b97) youth tech education network, we’ll be involved with events that encourage youth to explore the world of STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math],” adds Yo, who also leads Hive Waterloo. “We believe the best way to develop excitement and nurture STEM-based skills is through an engaging and interactive learning atmosphere.”

Hackademy courses will be led by experienced and knowledgeable instructors who will lead students aged 13 to 103 through curriculum covering software programming, design, hardware, and other engaging topics. Courses will be geared to varying experience levels from basic to advanced. A regularly updated course-offering calendar can be found at hackademy.ca/events.
