[kwlug-disc] Video Camera Help

I'm trying to use a network camera as an input device for video conferencing and I'm not sure where to begin. The camera is an Axis M1011, a network camera that support MJPEG via HTTP and MPEG4/H264 via RTSP.

The trick seems to be configuring this as a device under Linux. I've heard of v4l (video for Linux) but I'm not sure if this is a deprecated method or not.

So I have two questions really:

What is the standard video API for Linux, is it v4l?

And how do I configure a network camera in that standard video API?
