[kwlug-disc] best practices: running cron jobs as root?

a philosophical question -- do people have any strong opinions on
running system-related cron jobs as personal "root" cron jobs? that
is, submitting them via "crontab" while logged in as root so that
they're owned by the root account?

personally, i've always felt that, if you're an admin and setting up
cron jobs to run on behalf of the system (backups, etc.), they should
be added to the appropriate files under /etc. i think the root
account should be used for as little as possible.

  thoughts?
