I don't think that is the case any more.  My Dell Vostro 1500 (new 1510)
is what they sell with ubuntu in the States and runs ubuntu 8.04
perfectly (Intel wifi).  Bluetooth works.  Don't have a camera.

On the netbook side, the Acer One 8GB flash model runs 8.04 ubuntu (unr)
very well.  The only catch was to upgrade ALSA to the latest driver to
make the mic work properly. Camera, wifi OK.

Today, running Linux is a real option for practically any hardware.
