[kwlug-disc] previous debian install problem might have been HW-related

having given up on trying to install debian (5.0.1) on one of my
laptops because it just took forever, i finally did the smart thing
and grabbed another laptop off the shelf. this one seems to be
installing just fine as we speak. so i guess it was some weird
hardware problem.

however, if memory serves, the first couple test installs on the
original laptop worked fine, and only *then* did subsequent test
installs slow down. so i'm going to do a couple more test installs on
this one just to verify that nothing changes. (is it possible that
the install itself messes with some low-level settings that screws up
subsequent installs?)
