Nice analysis of the situation.  So does Linus/Linux hold off on these
new patches until Microsoft allows Linux to run virtual Windows "really
fast"?  I don't think it matters too much at this point:  the underlying
hardware is so fast that even an unoptimized XP VM on a Linux host will
give the Office user a nice ride.

Is this an opportunity for Linux?  Why buy Windows 7 when you can just
do a physical-to-virtual transfer of your existing XP install an run it
on Linux for free?  VMware has a lovely tool for such transfers:

Of course, I would prefer to have the final image running on VirtualBox.
 Apparently, the newer versions of VirtualBox will run VMware images.
