I liked the way that Ubuntu did it a few releases ago - there was a 
pretty splash screen, but the boot messages still scrolled away in the 
bottom quarter or so of the screen.  I suspect that most of the splashy 
booters can be configured this way, but I've never had any luck 
configuring those things properly.
