Only a few years ago for me, but I recall people with laptops almost
universally left them at home/rez on their desk.  The few that brought
them with them to school didn't use them to do any work. Take that as
you may.

Also, as a grad student now, I own an Acer Aspire with Ubuntu on it.
When it comes to doing research, writing papers, etc., as long as you
have an external keyboard/mouse and monitor for your primary work area
(a good idea with a laptop as well), it's absolutely fine to work on.
Heck, it's more powerful than my desktop was in undergrad.

note: there are 6,9,and 12 cell after-market batteries on ebay now if
you want ridiculous battery life.
