[kwlug-disc] Jon "maddog" Hall talk: Monday, 6pm, UW

Aww, shame that. We got to the lot by 5:55 and basically ran to MC.

The talk went long, 2.5 hours in the comfy room and apparently went on even
longer over beers near by.

Very good talk, lots of extremely interesting history from the 70s and 80s
especially, valuable coverage of open source software and hardware in
Brasil.
No chance to see the hardware platform though as Maddog seemed a bit
reticent about having it in view.
Good input from the 2 guys from LPI who were present.

Most of the last 90 minutes was spent with back-and-forth banter about how
to make money with FOSS and I am not sure that Maddog was able to convince
anyone in the room that it is possible to make GOOD money on it, at least,
not easily.

For my part, my concerns were mostly about how to promote Linux-based
distros to the masses and how to fight past the mis-perception that Linux
is *only* for fan/adepts of CLI. Grassroot attempts seems to be the only
useful answer from a couple of students and 1 seasoned IT guy -- social
platforms, hitting up libraries, mebbe even do a song-and-dance routine
complete with flashing lights and a couple of laptops running Linux just
inside the entrances to the local libraries.

Lovely man, glad I went.

Thanks,

Ron Singh
