It seems that this is a viable option (the only one for the time being?)

If you can gather some following around something that is informal, yet
functional (regular meetings with a variety of presenters and topics),
and with 'Linux' in its name, then VanLUG may eventually come to
its senses and join/merge with yours.

Try it out for a few months and see if takes off.
