First check TVFool and enter your exact address.

That should give you a rough idea of what is available in your area with
various antenna placing (indoor, attic, roof, ...)

Then, go to Futureshop and get the Philips SDV8625T, which is on sale this
week for $50. No amplifier needed.

Connect it to your TV and see what you get with it indoors, then out on the
porch, then on the roof.

Once you do that, you will know what is available and whether you want to
stick to this antenna for a few channels, or get a bigger one for a few
more.

Your TV must have an ATSC tuner. All TVs sold 2007 and after have that. If
yours is older, then check the manual to see if it has such a tuner, or
only the old analog tuner (which will not get you anything in this area).
