So, it turns out, I've been gifted with a dlink "DI-604 IP Router for
DSL/Cable Modems with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch", according to their
web page:

JTAG, so it really is purpose-built. It does work, though, and I
flashed it up to it's highest supported firmware, 3.53.

In the spirit of giving, I'd like to pass it on another member and
avoid e-waste.
