From what I've been able to find out Maemo was the best as far as development and programming are concerned.  That lasted almost three months according to most reports. I guess they figure freedom is fine as long as it means we are confused enough by the buzzword to feel free to give them money.

Gives a new slant on green oriented, doesn't it?

No, but I don't see Android all that different. The app store is more open, but 
they still lock me out of my own device.
