The 2048x2048 issue is likely your graphics driver and hardware (is it an
Intel GMA 950 or older?). You can manually specify a virtual screen size
larger than that in xorg.conf, but you will lose direct rendering, which is
quite the tradeoff. Unfortunately X needs to restart to change this
currently.

xrandr 1.3 is supposed to solve multi-monitor issues (maybe it will solve
multi-card issues, I do not know). My laptop only uses one external screen
in addition to the built-in LVDS, and that was covered under xrandr 1.2 on
my Intel X3100 on my old laptop.

The new laptop doesn't work so well due to the nvidia graphics driver. I'm
hoping for nouveau to at least give me xrandr since nvidia didn't see fit to
provide support for that, or a configuration utility that works reliably.

I'm afraid I can't comment on actually solving your issue, but hopefully
something I said will shed some light.
