MythTV trouble

I've been playing with KnoppMythRD50 on a machine with the following specs:

Asus A7N266-C motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4GHz) CPU
256MB DDR PC2100 (I have 512MB of PC2700 coming)
250GB PATA hard drive
Hauppage PVR 150 with IR-Blaster
ATI X1300 256MB AGP video card
10/100 NIC
Viewsonic 19" widescreen LCD

I signed up with Zap2it, and KnoppMyth appears to have correctly found all my channels. The problem I'm finding is that playing or recording media doesn't seem to work. I tried playing a show and just got a black screen on my LCD. Is it possible to display out to monitor/LCD or do you have to configure Component/S-Video out?

Replying to Forum comments

I haven't attended a KWLUG meeting in sometime, but it's quite encouraging to see the work that has gone into the site.

I see some issues on this board that I maybe able to help with but have noticed a lot of the messages don't allow replys. Any idea why I wouldn't be able to reply to certain messages? It seems the ones that already have responses to them I can also add comments. So I'm assuming the one that aren't getting comments are because the reply mechanism is unavailable. Maybe it has to do with the type of post being used. I'm sure clearing this up would go a long way.

Game help

Hello all, i recently have installed PHLAK linux on my other pc, and i have wine installed and am able to play games but they suck so much cpu and im not able to run quake 2 or install quake 3 arena. Quake 2 is only able to be played in software mode with no fullscreen and just a small X11 window and i mean the smallest one, i would like to know why it's sucking so much cpu, i have all the requirements for the game, i have a pentium 2 350MHZ machine and it's got 640MB or RAM and an ATI radeon 7000 agp 32MB graphics card whih is clearly capable of OpenGL graphics because i've run OpenGL graphics games on it before!!! I have no idea why they suck so much cpu power!!

Intro to

OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them; the project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways."

An introduction to the Who, What, Where, Why of OSM will be followed by a demo of the steps in collecting, categorizing and contributing data to OSM.

Password hacking

So I have this Norstar Startalk Mini that I have to get going, but we've lost all the Windows software (a real shame), and no one knows the administrator password. I connected the serial cable from the Startalk box to one of the Linux boxes under my desk, launched minicom on /dev/ttyS0 with 300 7N1 and voila: I got to see the box doing system startup tests.

At this point I tried sending some break signals, hoping to stop the box before it loaded the system software... but no luck.

I looked into minicom's internal scripting language, runscript. If you have minicom installed you should be able to just type man runscript to see the commands runscript will take.

Comparison to a Windows Domain in Linux

Ok, I've taken a few classes and done some UNIX/GNU Linux reading but have never seen this in any of my reading. I understand it at a local machine level, setting up users and groups with access to specific resources but never at a LAN/WAN level. Working in a completely Windows shop may have deluted my concepts as well.

What does Linux use for a multi-user Windows-domain-style set up (without a Windows domain)? I've seen a lot of 'server' versions of GNU Linux and distros but how do they authenticate in a multi-PC environment? Does GNU Linux offer the option to authenticate with a single server or 'domain controller' and then have access to multiple resources on the network? Where do you set up the users/groups?

What to do with the library...

As many of you know our LUG library has grown pretty large. At one point I was carting down 8 boxes of books, plus the projector, DVD, and speakers (often with the help of LUG members - thank you all). I've managed to reduce what I cart down to 4 boxes because I have quite a few on shelves around Computer Recycling -- but this limits what people see at each meeting. I'd like to make everything available to everyone, but it's a lot of work carting everything up and down, and I like to get out in time to join everyone for the after meeting meeting at Zekes.

I think what I'm going to do is bring down a couple of boxes with a good selection of titles. The library is on the web site. If people email me a couple of days ahead of each meeting I can confirm or deny whether a book is in or out. I think I'll work on managing and updating the library if no one minds.

Dumb C coding question.

I was messing around with C last night following a few examples in the book "C in Easy Steps" and I wrote some code for which I get a cast error. I delved into the brief pointers section of the book, but it didn't help clarify how to solve the problem. (Sorry I can't be exact, I left the actual code at home). The code segment went something like this:

char yesno;

printf("\n Again (y/n)?");
scanf("%c", &yesno);
while (yesno="y");

I also tried something like:

char yesno;
char *yesno_ptr=&yesno;

printf("\n Again (y/n)?");

Configure Ubuntu (linux) sound

Hi everyone,

I just installed Ubuntu June 2006 version on my x86 Pentium 4 PC. I have a HUGH problem configuring the sound / multimedia system.

I have a C-Media 9880 sound card manufactured in Taiwan. Currently the Volume Control can let me choose between:

a) C-Media CMI 9880 (OSS Mixer) or
b) HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer)

#1 Here is my lspci output:

john@john-desktop:~$ lspci

Multi-site Drupal configuration

Are you using the Drupal content management system?

Want to run more than one Drupal site from your server? This should get you started. I'm presuming that you have root access to your Drupal box and it is called sandbox.local .

0. Set up a single site Drupal installation

Start a default, single site installation working by following the excellent instructions. Make sure that you can browse it by hostname. You do have local DNS , or a hosts file, right? You have it right when you can browse the site at sandbox.local .
