A good number of people at KWLUG sure love running servers at home.
(Who knew that there were even computer servers any more? I thought
servers no longer existed because all our stuff is stored in The Cloud
(tm), which is made of fluffy water particles and not computer
hardware?) Like pogo sticks and macram, servers are back in
style. During last month's meeting the topic of Network Attached
Storage (NAS) products came up, which provide storage for all those
cat videos and family pictures accessible to different devices on your
home network.

We decided to devote this month's meeting to a no-holds-barred claws
out fight between two products: TrueNAS and Unraid. TrueNAS is a
family of storage products -- some based on FreeBSD, some based on
Debian GNU/Linux. Unraid is a proprietary product based on Linux.
Jason Paul and Colin_ will be standing up for TrueNAS, and John Steel
will be defending Unraid. Regardless of the winner we will learn some
things about what features are out there, and what people like and
dislike about these NAS products.

In other news, we will be having another restaurant meetup on
Wednesday, March 13. The restaurant is TBA, but may involve Pho. I
suppose you can pre-emptively RSVP to dinner@kwlug.org . We'll post
more details to the website and mailing list as we have them.

Elsewhere in the community, the UW Computer Museum is holding another
hardware day on Tuesday, March 5 from 10am to 4pm. They will have lots
of retro hardware on display, and I believe will be trying to get some
of that gear working again. There will also be a talk by Devon Merner
on how the iMac G5 was used in the development of the Xbox. See more
information here: https://uwaterloo.ca/computer-museum/events/computer-museum-hardware-day-march-5-2024

There are other events happening this month too! See watcamp.com for
more.

That's what I have for this month. We will again be holding our KWLUG
meeting in hybrid format (and would be interested in opinions about
how that is going). The meeting will start at 7pm on both
University of Waterloo.
