Thanks for that, Paul. I just added it to my list of followees.

I've found that since we started discussing Mastodon here in the KWLUG mail that I've gotten more followers and followees, so that's great.

But I made a discovery last night..

My only interface so far with Mastodon has been via the web browser on my desktop computer. I found it to be a somewhat confusing interface and honestly, it wasn't giving me a warm fuzzy feeling. But last night, lying in bed, reading books on my old tablet, I thought I'd see if I could get Mastodon via an Android app on the tablet. Sure enough, there was one that looked reasonably official to me. So I installed it, and wow, what a difference. It looks (sorry) like Twitter now, where everything I need to read is in one long column that I can scroll through easily. See, on the web browser I have it set up with several narrow columns, one of which is the part where I type my toots, one of which is the feed, two of which are searching for certain hashtags (#ubuntu and #ansible), and the last one is the "Getting Started" column, which holds the feared "Federated Timeline" button, which I will never ever use again... But that column also flips over to be the "working" column where I can drill down on stuff, change settings, etc. Yes, I set it all up that way, but yes, I find it too confusing to read. It was even more confusing before, so I lived with it.

The android app, however, is very clean and simple. Much easier to read. So now I'm on the hunt for an Ubuntu desktop app that will sit quietly in the corner and let me see my followees' posts discretely. I'll let you know what I find (unless someone in KWLUG has already solved that riddle and will share with the group...)

On Tue, Nov 22, 2022 at 4:20 AM Paul Nijjar via kwlug-disc <kwlug-disc@kwlug.org> wrote:

The url is: https://wrmstdn.ca/@kwlug . If you are Fediverse-inclined,
please subscribe and retoot relevant posts to help spread the word.

It mostly forwards videos and upcoming meetings from kwlug.org, and
(in a clunky way) tweets from the official KWLUG Twitter account.

The Mastodon server wrmstdn.ca is a hyperlocal Waterloo Region
Mastodon instance.

I selected this server because Fosstodon doesn't like bots. Maybe this
server will not live long, but so long as we can migrate then it does
not matter.

If somebody (Andrew? Bob Jonkman?) would like to help get real tweets
mirrored to the Mastodon or the other way around, then that would be
great. Otherwise Andrew can just tweet as usual and messages will
hopefully find their way to this account.

If anybody would like to co-moderate this social media or take it over
completely that would be great. The bus factor is pretty bad with this
one. (It is also bad for the VPS we use to send RSS feeds to the
Mastodon site.)
