It's by default installed on KNOPPIX, which is how I first
found out
about it.

That was interesting on my client system. I almost feel like
I went
on a journey :-).

I've been addicted to top since I first found out about it on
NetBSD
in 1996 or so. It's so interesting. I once submitted a top
output as
a screenshot for my last LUG, but with only it and bash and
kernel
threads running on 256 GB of RAM, which was a lot at the
time. Some
other people were impressed and voted for it, but I did not
win =).

I have noticed that top on Linux uses /proc and uses several
times as
much CPU as BSD's sysctl interface, but I guess that's a
compromise on
Linux that I am willing to make.

I'll have to give htop another try since so many people are
enthusiastic
for it. :) I have never really liked the system monitors
that came
with OS X, GNOME, KDE, etc., although gtop or gprocess
manager, or
something, a GTK 1.x top redo was good. I don't know why
GNOME System
Monitor and Ksysguard are so slow, but it's a turn off.

I used to have the task manager open on Windows all the time,
that's
probably their nicest program.
