While this isn't a cheap(er) option, there are inverter/chargers with pure sine wave, and the ability to auto transfer between mains and battery. Tripp-lite makes some decent ones that can be hard-wired to 120v.

Example:

https://www.tripplite.com/1000w-powerverter-aps-12vdc-120v-inverter-charger-pure-sine-wave-output-hardwired~APS1012SW/

It's definitely not a kludged solution. You still need some decent deep cycle batteries... but it's another solution. :)

On Tue, Apr 11, 2017 at 12:11 AM, L.D. You want to avoid the cheapest/least-expensive standby UPS and
go with a line-interactive device. If your power source is really
suspect - like from a diesel generator - go with a double-conversion
UPS.
For line-interactive or better designs, the difference in pricing between
vendors tends to fade out. Then where/what to buy becomes a question
of supporting local business and quality of service. I work with
Eaton, APC and Tripplite UPS hardware everyday and generally they
are all of good quality (ex. Tripplite SNMP/web cards!).
