That's my point. There is nothing in your description regarding OpenWRT, nor is OpenWRT necessary, nor even perhaps useful, in what you've described thus far.

Different beasties, good learning curve on each. If I were in your shoes, I'd be completing Ooma and evaluating performance / other needs before moving on to add OpenWRT.

It's equally valid to think a separate box, or your NAS, could do the same thing. And not add yet another beastie to grok.

In my case, having played with OpenWRT, for my use case, when the hardware failed I just got another router and lived with stock - rather than re-figuring out how to reapply OpenWRT, even if I had taken the time to source OpenWRT'able hardware (remember, no ISP connectivity at that point), get it on, and figure out how to restore / transfer settings from old OpenWRT to new.

It'd be different if I was creating OpenWRT installs every day, or every other week, rather than the less than every other year I've experienced to date. And every time I do I have to re-sink into the ecosystem, it takes some non-trivial amount of time.

[Connectivity, at all, of prime importance at the time of failure - for my use case OpenWRT hadn't provided so much additional value that I ever went back after restoration to put OpenWRT on the new beastie. Since then ... I've gotten more value from OpenWRT as an extra device for other things, e.g. OpenVPN, than as my front end router.]

When time permits you can always insert OpenWRT between your house and the ISP router, or even replace the ISP router. But when the ISP router fails, you want it back, right now! (So having a backup device to hand may always be useful. Even if all you use it for in between is as a 4 port switch.)

Good point, I've changed the subject line.
This conversation forked a few times a couple of weeks ago, so yes, it no
long has anything to do with openWRT (unless you consider that I will be
running my phones through an openWRT router?)
Khalid noted that the reference code he had has expired. He also noted if
your price was $150 not $100 (I think), his code was indeed not working.
So far as I know, nothing here / the Ooma involves openWRT. Perhaps it's
time to change the subject line?
Well we finally got this settled... After much yelling and screaming
and using words that I was making up on the spot, I got Bell to: a)
cancel the satellite accountb) admit they were wrong about the rental
unitc) credit me for one year's rental charges So Phase Three of
"Project Bye-Bye Bell" is now complete (Phase One was move from Bell
DSL to TekSavvy Cable, Phase Two was move my cellphone to Telus,
Phase Three is the TV) All that remains is Phase Four: cancel the
home phone and Phase Five: Move Wifeski's cell to Telus. So I'm 90%
ready to order the home phone package from Ooma. Khalid, do you
still have that reference code so you get a bonus for referring me?
Let me know as soon as you can so I can place the order. This weekend
Wifeski and I are going to that "mall" thing where they keep the
Telus store and spying out some cellphones for her. We will be more
than happy to pay the early cancellation fee, especially now that we
have a credit account from the rental charges refund! Then I will do
my best Martin Luther King Jr. impersonation with my rendition of
"Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last."
!! Thanks to all of the gang here who helped so far! Jeff
Oh God! Paying rent for 3 years on a returned unit.
Actually cancelling the satellite in itself isn't a problem, it's
that these crooks are claiming that we still have a rental receiver.
That unit broke three years ago and they didn't have replacement
parts so we sent the unit back and bought a new one. Now they are
saying that we still have it "at our cottage" (I've never owned a
cottage).

So I phoned a different department (billing) and asked them why the
hell have I been paying rental this past three years. so now they're
trying to find the rental unit in their records.

Nevertheless, we've had it with Bell so we're dropping all of their
services even if we have to pay penalties..
For Wifeski and I, we are in the middle of making Ma Bell walk the
plank.. This is a bit off topic but ultimately it all comes under
"why I need unlimited internet and a good router firmware".

We are trying to cancel our Bell satellite TV. They are pulling
several tricks right now to get us to stay (including something that
sounds like extortion to me), but they will be gone shortly. That's
$90 a month liberated in the Name of the People.

Bell changed their terms of effective March 31. You have every right
to cancel their services without penalty. I was moving and saved 6
months of charges. You have until the end of April to opt out. This
was in the January bill package.
