I do this all the time, since I want to be only on LTS releases, whether on the desktop or the servers.

I use do-release-upgrade exclusively for upgrading Ubuntu, not the apt* way(s).

In order to restrict do-release-upgrade to LTS releases only, you edit the file
'apt-get dist-upgrade' allows it to install new packages (like kernel
images), not just upgrade existing files. Sometimes that's necessary.
It won't upgrade the entire distribution from 12.04 to 12.10

'do-release-upgrade' would upgrade the distribution from 12.04 to
12.10. But I'm not quite sure how you would upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04
and skip all the releases in between...
