And I've been using IxQuick on-and-off for years, and almost exclusively for the last month: https://ixquick.com

Not only did I set the default search bar to IxQuick (from http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html?name=ixquick ) but I also set Firefox's address bar to do keyword searches on IxQuick:

type about:config in the address bar

Acknowledge the potential for damaging your system

Search for the keyword.URL entry

Change it to https://ixquick.com/do/metasearch.pl?query=

IxQuick is a metasearch engine, which searches All the Web, Digg, Qkport, Ask/Teoma, EntireWeb, Wikipedia, Bing, Gigablast, Yahoo, Cuil and Open Directory. Almost everything except Google. Like DuckDuckGo it claims to respect privacy by not recording IP addresses or cookies, and keeping logs no longer than 48 hours. Unlike DuckDuckGo I don't think it's Open Source.

All in all, I've been very pleased with the results IxQuick provides.
Some on this list express concern about Google having a monopoly on search, and tracking their users for search terms, and much more.

Here is an alternate search engine that explicitly does not track its users.

http://duckduckgo.com/

I have been using it almost exclusively for the last 2 weeks, by changing FireFox's search box to use it by default.

It is surprisingly good, and in some cases, its results are not as cluttered as Google's results (e.g. product search pages).

Obviously, it is built using Open Source itself.
http://ostatic.com/blog/duckduckgo-a-new-search-engine-built-from-open-source

Check why they are different
http://duckduckgo.com/about.html

What is missing? Basic search works well, and the links on the top of the search results are very helpful (so called Zero Click).

But sometimes I search Google for something, then check the results quickly, then realize that it is better to search Google News or Google Images. The tabs that Google has on the top are very useful in that case. Although DuckDuckGo has similar news, images, ...etc. search, they are not as useful as Google's.

Maybe over time they will improve, and competition is always good for the consumers.

Shows that there is always room for innovation ...
