What about simply making OpenStreetMap.org the FLOSS fund candidate? I didn't see this suggestion in the thread below...but I can't imagine that it hasn't been tabled yet.

Thanks for the links on how to contribute to relief/aid using OSM. I was scheduled to travel to Port Au Prince on Feb. 10th, but my humanitarian work has been postponed due to the recent events. Using OSM I can still contribute to my organization's team that was in situ when disaster struck.
The ground and voltage pins on a USB connector are slightly longer than
the data pins, so that as you insert the USB connector into the
computer's socket, stable voltage is available before the data pins
connect. So, it's supposed to be completely hot-pluggable. Similar to
a computer that powers up, but only activates its circuitry when the
power supply's "power good" line indicates everything is ready to go.
hot-pluggability, and is reconsidering the whole idea of posting this
Hi,

I hope folks will forgive this co-opting of the FLOSS fund just this once.
I realize this is an exception to the rules, but this is an exceptional
case, and I figured it was at least worth nominating, even if we decide
in the end that personal donations are a better idea. Either way is good
with me.

I nominate a Haiti relief fund, specifically the Red Cross, for
February's FLOSS fund.

It is possible to donate online:
I mean no disrespect, I disagree this is a valid kwlug floss fund
candidate.

I don't disagree the worthiness of the cause. There will always be
worthy causes.

As you point out, people can contribute in other ways than the floss fund.

It's another slippery slope here, for the floss fund.
Now, if you had a FLOSS project that aimed to provide better software
for relief agencies to deliver their support, or manage their delivery
of that support, I'm right there with you. e.g. Donation management,
or transport packing/logistics support.

No different, to my mind, how/why OLPC is worthy.

Perhaps either is arguable, but it's a worthy / viable argument.
But feel free to contribute to Red Cross or the aid group of your
choice now. No need to wait until our next meeting.

On the other hand, if you DO want to add a Free Software spin, you can
help in Haiti from your computer. OpenStreetMap is an Open Source,
and Open Geo Data project. Some of you may have heard of it? OSM has
been working with relief and rescue groups, international aid groups,
military groups and corporations to help in Haiti. (Also for the
current flooding emergency in Skoder Albania)

Military resources and corporations have been flying missions over
Port au Prince and the region to get up to date imagery of the area.
These folks have been fantastic about publishing their images in open
formats and granting access and permission for use by OpenStreetMap.
OSM volunteers have been interpreting the images and improving /
updating the map of Haiti. They initially added to the road network
and marked roads blocked with rubble and fallen bridges. Other
mappers have been marking refugee camps, fallen buildings, field
hospitals, reported entrapment locations, aid depots, changes in the
coastline, damaged piers and other items as requested.

You can help too.

There is a quick video on how to help here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6pBBK1SHh0

You'll find tips in the email following [from Katie F. on OSM-talk]
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Haiti/New_Mapper

What we've done up until now is digitize streets and features, looked
for collapsed buildings (less priority now), and for camps (high
priority now). We used imagery from GeoEye and DigitalGlobe, but the
resolution was only so good. We now have access to .15 m resolution
imagery from Google, with their permission, we can trace from in
OpenStreetMap.

What I'm doing now (and you can do) is going back through what's been
done in Port-au-Prince and other areas and identifying camps. We
missed many before, but are apparent in the new imagery.

I am using Potlatch, the web-based editor (the edit tab on the OSM site).

We have a couple video tutorials that might help you with using Potlatch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6pBBK1SHh0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oio1jY8WNig

For camps, I am simply drawing them as polygons. Tags I use are:

* tourism = camp_site
* refugee = yes
* source = Google

(others on this list may be able to suggest better tags that these,
but these work)

We can also do cleanup of the existing data, using the new imagery
(e.g. some roads need to be fixed).

If you have questions, you can e-mail the osm-talk list. Or feel free
to join us on live chat: http://irc.openstreetmap.org and we can
answer questions and help you out.

Thanks again for willingness to help out with mapping!

Dear Chris et al,

Maybe it's just better to set up a Haitian Relief Fund independent of the
FLOSS Fund and on behalf of KWLUG members who contribute,
send the money to the Red Cross.

I'd be happy to cook up a pot of chili and bring it to one of the meetings
and have everyone who enjoys a bowl, contribute to the fund. :) Perhaps
maybe even our new location would facilitate that effort!
I forgot the "punchline" the "so what" of my earlier email on OSM and
Haiti relief.

OSM is showing the always updating map with a delay as small as a few minutes.

Other OSM volunteers are publishing new and up to date maps in a
format that can be printed on large paper maps several times per hour.
Maps compatible with handheld GPS devices are published roughly every
five minutes. These maps were in use as the first relief teams arrive
last week. OSM has received thank yous from several outfits and
people on the ground in Haiti, which is really awesome considering how
full their hands must be right now. Between the OSM tools and
volunteers and the multi-disciplinary folks at crisis-mapping,
requests for map updates and features are flying fast and furious.

If you have any OSM experience, you can help.

If you know anybody from Haiti, and can help them to use the OSM
tools, it would be very helpful to have their experience identifying
things, so that they can be named on the map.

Well, not yet because there isn't one - but there should be. If there
ever was an opportunity to promote the benefits of opensource to the
public, now's the time. Haiti is all over the news, and Richard, you've
got a human interest story in openstreetmap. All the techno nerds
around the world poring over opensource maps, collectively helping the
people on the ground in Haiti save lives.

It screams, no, demands, a press release. You've got thank you's from
people on the ground? Stories of people using these practical
applications, for free? Somehow there has to be a front page story there
(heck, I'm already more interested than half the nonsense I see on the
front page most days).

I'd urge you to put something out there. I'd be happy to help however I
can (if even only proof reading, or faxing, or finding where to send
this to), but I'd love to see you put something together to get it out
there publicly.
