Falling back to our recent lug discussions :) I've been thinking about
all the nice things that we could have, if only somebody would build
them.

1) asterisk in a box, available on centos. It'd be nice if it was off
the shelf on other distros. I think it's kinda there but not perfect.
2) backup server in a box, with a nice admin panel and all the
monitoring one could want. It's bizarre that in 2010 we're still
having a discussion on pros and cons of different backup systems. This
should be well worn technology by now.
3) I'd love to see a project that takes a regular distro install for a
webserver and tweaks/fully optimizes it. Using off the shelf, not a
hybrid system (I know there's faster stuff than apache for example -
but I'll stick to apache thanks).

A good example is the 'perfect mandriva server' that someone put
together - I've actually used sections of this tutorial over the years:

If only I had the time :).
Oh. Oh! And since some of us are using disks for backup, how are we
keeping an eye on disk aging on the backup server? SMART? And the
logs and notices go ... ? Any chance I can get the smartmon out put
to drive a full-sized traffic signal in my kitchen?
