Perhaps the future of search will be a distributed search engine. 
Difficult to say, it's been proposed but not yet done successfully. 
Also difficulty with spamming the results if the engine lets 'me'
provide data to them.<br>

For a little while last summer there was an "open source" search engine
that I found, Wikia. They had a public beta, and I ran a web crawler for
them. But they eventually closed due to lack of interest or something:
