LPI is a little different as it's non-profit though and it may not be the case with them.

I've taken the LPI exams (1 and 2) as well as Red Hat RHCE, Novell Linux CLE, Microsoft MCSE and lots of other exams. I am also an employer of Linux skilled individuals.

That may sound like I've got a valuable opinion, but I caution you that any one person's opinion is often just that. I hire only very skilled computer consultants that need to know a broad range of skills.

So here's my opinion:

I think the Red Hat Enterprise exams are the best test of skills, followed by Novell CLE, then LPI. I always try to qualify the person behind the certification as well. How they prepared for the exam.

The Red Hat and Novell exams are practical. You have to configure or fix a system under a time limit. In Red Hat's case there is a long list of broken items or software to configure. In Novell's case its a short list of difficult tasks. In both cases the pass percentage is much higher than 60% and the failure rate on the exams is high.

The LPI exams are multiple choice like most computer vendor exams. As a multiple choice exam it can favour someone with a reasonable memory or someone who is lucky. It can be faked like so many Microsoft exams are.

The LPI is easy to take. They can often be had for $50 each at trade shows. They have even come to the KWLUG and given exams. If you can muster enough people they may come out and do a local one again.

In the end certifications help on resumes and the appearance of any Linux cert on a resume shows a distinct interest in Linux. LPI is the easiest way to acheive that. but if you really want to impress put the cash out for an RHCE or CLE. There are a good number of RHCE prep books buy one, use it on Centos, get good at what's in it and shell out the money for the exam.
