[kwlug-disc] Alternative to unattended upgrades ...

In my case, I uninstall the unattended-upgrades package as soon as I
install Ubuntu or Xubuntu LTS on a machine.

Why? Because when upgrades are unattended, things can happen without being
scheduled, such as restarting Varnish and invalidating all the cache in it,
or causing some downtime when MySQL is restarted, or in a worst case
scenario, something fails to restart and then there is an extended downtime
if you are on the road.

What is the alternative?
The apticron package.

It emails you when updates are available, and you choose the time to
install them manually off hours, or on weekends.

The emails get sent to "root", so I set up forwarding from root to my
regular email in Postfix, using a virtual.cf file.
