You are missing something. My first attempt was to put NixOS on my
computer, not Debian. Maybe there is something like
unattended-upgrades on that but (a) I was not able to find it, and (b)
it seems contrary to the spirit of NixOS.

Now I am running Debian on my computer with the Nix package manager
for additional packages.
