That solves the "wrong editing, and wrong display" problem.
But the degree sign shows as that place holder question mark

Like this:

abcdefg "�C" 134567890

I added these 2 lines to my .screenrc to make that permanent

defutf8 on
utf8 on on

But not seeing the special character is wrong.

What happens if you don't use screen? Just ssh into the remote host and use

Direct ssh to the host, without screen in between, works fine.
So it is screen that is causing this.

And they cause the question mark thing above.
